My friends PC will just instant shut down (shuts off asif power button is held down) when any strain is put on it for example running a virus scan or a game.

Is this the PSU acting up?

To anyone this cannot be good, peak temperature of 85degrees no joke in less than a minute of running a virus scan.

Sounds like a cpu going bad. Mixed with poor air flow. On the other hand, it could be your motherboard. If the board overheats often, it starts to damage it's heat sensors.

I think it's fixed, I replaced the heat-sync and new thermal paste and viola, no crashes yet and my friend has been playing COD4 perfectley.
