For those of you saying that BrainBread cannot work without Steam, I would like to say that you are wrong. I was able to make a LAN game my first go around. I have not done any testing what-so-ever of any glitches or errors that can occur, but I can tell that I was able to make a dedicated server that I can play over LAN, and probably over Hamachi. I myself was able to join my own game, and I've been able to get other mods that are "steam-ed" to work with hamachi after a few days of research and messing around with commands.

(Don't ask me to keep a dedicated server running, my internet is piss poor and I've been doing this to get ready for a LAN party so it'll be smooth sailing when we want to play these mods.)

And for those of you saying that it is illegal for me to play normal half life without steam and whatever, I have a completely legit old copy of half life, with the case and it's original cdkey. I tried a couple of times to install Steam with that cdkey, but it was completely invalid. So I pretty much never want to use Steam, if they want to screw me over like that. I'm not going to go the extra mile for a program I don't want.

Anywho, back to getting BB and most other mods to work with LAN or hamachi.

Make a shortcut of HLDS (Half-Life Dedicated Server), and name it something like BrainBread Server or something. Right click, go to properties. Under target and after the "" you are going to put the following. -nomaster -ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx +sv_lan 1 -game brainbread -map "anyBBmap".

-nomaster I believe helps to make sure your server does not check the master server if it is fully up to date, and it also doesn't check cdkeys. -ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is going to be either your hamachi IP or your LAN network IP. I haven't tested pure LAN IP, but I believe it is either going to be something like 192.168.0.101, or 127.0.0.1, and I also think it depends on your hub or router aswell. I'll post later when I figure that out this weekend. Also, if you are going to play half life on hamachi you will have to do a little tweaking with IPs and aliases. Search on google for something like Hamachi Alias or Hamachi Counter Strike and it will tell you about aliases. Sounds like a lot of work but it's not hard.

+sv_lan 1 is to make sure that only people on your local area network (LAN) can join your game. It does not check the internet at all. Hamachi, although is through the internet, counts as a LAN connection. (Although, definitely not as fast since it is limited to your internet connection.) -game brainbread is the file that the server is going to look into for loading everything, maps, textures, sounds, server configurations, etc. -map "anyBBmap" is to tell it which map to load up when it starts. You can leave this out if you wish, but when the dedicated server window pops up, you will have to type in map "anyBBmap" (look in brainbread/maps for all map names.) and it will load that one.

Now I have noticed one thing, that when you manually try to create a game without steam and without a dedicated server, you can only see the mecklenburg map. With the dedicated server I was able to load up other maps, so don't worry too much about it. I think I got an error message on one map. Perhaps I typed it in wrong, I don't know.

I have not seen or tested any other glitches, like I said earlier. But I have heard of graphical errors like the flamethrower not looking right, along with a few other UI problems like skill points. I'm not too worried about it, since it's just going to be for a crazy late night lan and we are used to slightly broken mods anyway.

Also, take note that this is what worked for me, and it may not work for you. I am using an older version of hamachi, 1.0.1.5 to be exact, with windows xp pro. I have also been messing around with a lot of network settings, so don't get frustrated if this doesn't work for you. Just be glad that despite what most everyone says here, that playing BB and other mods is possible without steam.

I only have 3 points:

1) Firstly, yes it is possible to play BB without steam, but some features depend on Steam and "steamed" Half-Life, and so may not work properly or at all - you find the right spot on the right map doing the right action, and the game will probably crash. Altogether it is less stable and not as the creators intended the BrainBread experience to be.

2) No, of course it's not illegal to play Half-Life without steam (who said that anyway?), nor is it illegal to play an unpatched version of any game I can think of. What lunacy is this?

3) As you said, you have not tested for glitches etc, but the game seems to run fine and good enough for you, so good luck with this. I am curious, however as to why you would wish to play BrainBread without steam? (It is also possible to play the game without a complete Half-Life version, though it's far too much trouble than it's worth.)

I don't know, going through random forums for other games I have run across quite a few people saying that it is illegal to play without steam or some other bs like that. I know better than that, and I'm confident that the gestapo is not going to bust down my door and arrest me for playing half life without steam. I was just trying to save myself the replies of stupid people being completely retarded. I thought it was just one person being stupid, but I saw quite a few different people saying it.

And like I said before, I don't really want to go out and buy a new half life just to play on LAN. I have no intentions of playing online at all... so playing without steam with my friends at a LAN is just fine with me. That's why I put so much effort into it. Besides, Steam seems like fascism to me. ^^

I'm pretty sure that; if you don't go buy a new copy of HL1, Valve is going to come to your house, bust down your door, and kick your ass.

Steam started as a really cool program that let you instantly receive updates and see all your games in one place, unfortunately, in recent years it's grown into some sort of power-crazed monster !
