This fix involves the registry. I can in no way be held responsible for the damage which it may cause to your system. NOTE: Use 'scanregw' to make a backup copy of the registry before you edit it...if you don't your machine could be fux0r3d.

Step 1
Open up REGEDIT by going to START and clicking on RUN. In the box type:

regedit

And hit OK.

Step 2
Browsing the registry is like browsing your computer w/ Windows Explorer, except there is one rule here: Don't change what you don't comprehend. Browse to the following position:

\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Half-Life\

Find the key named User Token2, right click on it and goto Modify. In the box containing what looks to be random numbers and letters [really an md5 hash of your password], highlight the gibberish and delete it. Do not type in the password you want here, it will not work. The password is stored as a hash value [which means no decoding] which you must encode first. I suggest just doing it in HL. Once you have deleted the hash click OK, then exit RegEdit. Congrats! You have removed content control.

i looked through the registry and that looked like a very simple operation, but if you're hesitant on working with the registry there's this program. however i'd trust doing the work myself over downloading a random program off the internet.

Yea, those instructions are 100% fool proof. Even if you somehow managed to delete your entire half-life registry keys, the worst that could happen is a re-install. Best to do them yourself as anyone else (parent or reg-program) will be more prone to mess things up.

p.s. @ any other programmers out there, aren't they incorrect about the md5 hash values? Aren't there programs that can decode a hash value back into its original characters?

possible? yeah... but that requires some serious computing power. an entire linux cluster would still require a lot of time to fully decode it. (we are talking about months if not years)

hmmm... so it is possible? Interesting, if you could unhash and discover someone's character password, chances are they'd probably use that password for multiple other things.... score ph34r.gif
