Yeah, what is that? The old version? And there are many HL1 mods that need Steam to work. Some being Sven Co-op, Battle Grounds, and Master Sword. Do'h! Besides, I don't understand why it's so hard for people to download and install Steam. It'll like take what, 30 seconds of your time? |

-------------------- When He opened the fourth seal I heard the voice of the fourth living being say, "Come!" Then I looked and saw an ash-colored horse. The name of its rider was Death, and Hades followed him closely. Authority was granted them over a quarter of the earth, to kill with the sword, with famine, with plaque, and by means of the wild beasts of the earth.

None sense, it work on old version too. Have you ever heard of WON2, the most multi server online that hates Steam, Steamless project that what they call em. You may think WON is dead, NO! there making a steam less CS:CZ and CS 1.6 and I believe they'll going to make a steamless out of any thing just request it. I was going to request them a steamless Natural Selection (It only works on steam), but oh well... maybe next time, too busy studying C++ thingy and stuff. I think I'll revive this since I remember the last time Won2 was 'discussed', and it looks like there's still a lot of misinformation.
One: Brainbread DOES work on pre-Steam Half-Life clients/servers. I'd say 90% of post Steam mods do--though not perfectly. Specifically, in BrainBread: *You can't run a listenserver. That's true for almost all post Steam mod-pre Steam engine setups. If you want to play by yourself, run a dedicated server and connect to it. *Experience is broken whenever there are two or more players. I suspect this has something to do with IDs being identical. There's a linux patch actually that will derive an ID from a player's IP address, but I've never tested to see if that helps. *The flamethrower is visually broken. It kills zombies though. *The little HUD messages telling you what your objectives are are missing after a map change. Follow the blinking yellow circle, or close out of HL and reconnect after every map. This is most likely a bug in the older engine that's fixed now--I'll look into it at some point in time. If you absolutely, positively, refuse to use Steam, you can still play Brainbread, minus some graphical flair. If you only want to play by yourself, then it's not much different. Anyone asking for pre-Steam support can just stop right now though--it's clear that won't happen, and it'll run well enough as is anyway. |

Be that as it may, this is the third incarnation of this thread I've seen (not counting one on moddb), and each one degenerates into arguing over what's possible and what's not. Now you know. Feel free to route anyone else bringing it up to this post, and flame them for not searching first.
