The rumours about impending violence aren't helping, either. I went out for a few drinks with a friend of mine, and there were a lot of people around, presumably wanting to see if anyone was stupid enough to cause trouble. There were police everywhere. They're calling in Special Constables (volunteer police officers, for those of you who aren't UK-based) and extending shifts and cancelling leave for regulars. I'm in east Kent, so there's no trouble here (and won't be, fingers crossed). Unless the rioters and looters get their hands on firearms or start making an active attempt to kill people, I doubt they're going to bring in the Army.

As far as I know, there is no official reasoning behind it. However, two criminologists had a look at the theories and discussed their merits and weaknesses right here. -------------------- |
