The player limit includes the listenserver, too. You'll just have to use the "maxplayers" command before hosting a server.

How is this done?

renegade: i have no idea to be honest. maybe its the mapper who has to do that, but i dont know. posting to add a little info on seeting a password, and player limit.

there are 2 ways currently known to set a password / maxplayer limit. atleast for the maxplayerlimit there are 2 ways.

the first would be directly editing the listenserver.cfg or the server.cfg and changing the standard values there.

the second would be inputting the information directly into the console before starting up a map, by seperate commands. so, in the console, if you want to start up a game use:

maxplayers 12
password (your password here)
map (mapname of the map you wish to play.

you can also edit any other values you might want to set for your server in the console of steam. it should work. if it doesnt, and anybody finds out another way, post it in the FAQ thread. (update 7/12/2004: it doesnt seem to work currently. its beeing looked at to be fixed. for some people though it does seem to work because ive seen servers with less then 32 players.)

oh yea! page 3, my bad:
QUOTE (|2enegade @ Dec 8 2004, 10:48 PM)
TO ANSWER ALL QUESTION ON MAX PLAYERS & SERVER SET UP:

When starting a dedicated or listen server, steam takes precedence.  Always remember that.  So if you have maxplayers set to 12 in your server.cfg or listenserver.cfg it will be OVERWRITTEN by what is displayed on the steam server window.  Thus (take me for example) if I set maxplayers to 3 in my .cfg file and then open my dedicated server window and the drop down list that says maxplayers is highlighted to 32, then steam automatically will take the value in the drop down list OVER the value in your server.cfg.  The reason being is that the order of scanning follows like this:
First: your server.cfg
Second: Steam's settings in the server setup GUI
Make sure your maxplayers value is correctly entererd into the steam server setup GUI too!!!

The same goes for passwords.  Basically any option you see on the steam window will override what is in your server.cfg.  Make sure you set maxplayers and password etc. through the steam window!

I.E. when I start my server Steam gives me the following options when creating it:
Game: Brain Bread
Server Name: |2enegade's Justice Crew 3
Map:  bb_heavensgate
Network: Internet
Max Players: 3
UDP port: 27015
RCON password: *******

Thus it is very important to realize that no matter what you have in your server.cfg or listenserver.cfg that pertains to the above settings, steam's server setup GUI takes precedence because it is loaded after your settings.
I.E. if server name in my server.cfg were to say BB Server, it wouldn't matter, whatever appears in the "Server Name:" heading of the setup GUI is what your server will be.
When you start your server you will be given additional options such as:
Map:
Player Password:
Map Cycle:
**VERY IMPORTANT
Player password MUST be set through this interface
ALSO map changes should be done through the DROP DOWN list and NOT through the console.  Map changes through console causes your server to shutdown and restart, whereas map changes through the drop down list dont shut the server down.

(MOST OF THE ABOVE INFORMATION PERTAINS TO DEDICATED SERVERS)

HOW TO APPEND YOUR PLAYER LEVEL FILE:

I'm not sure if the dev's want me to let this information out, but seeming as its pretty obvious.....
there's a players.lvl, open it, it's pretty straight foward.

I am currently working on a program that will read and organize players players levels for server admin use.

P.S. the numbers AREN'T steam id's, they are coded.  I *think* I've cracked the code..... but I won't say, figuring it out by your self is more challenging  tongue.gif

HINT: take your steam ID and compare it to the ID listed for you in your players.lvl

As for the map command, 'changelevel' is better .. if there are people connected to your server, since 'map' restarts the server with the new map and thus disconnects the other players from you.

it seems that it affects just the client hosted servers, listenservers. set up a dedicated, and every value set in the .cfg's will be saved.

a listen server, so a create game you do in the menu, seems to revert every value to default when launched. players, password, timelimit, and so on.

TSS, I've been saying this from day 1 !!!!
And I've posted it numerous times, I just don't know why no one evers reads it!!
ONE MORE TIME FOR EVERYONE:
THE STEAM SERVER GUI TAKES PRECEDENCE OVER WHAT IS IN YOUR .CFG FILE.
Thus even though you have maxplayers 12 in your .cfg, whatever appears in the server GUI (the one that allows u to set up the server name, password, etc) will take PRECEDENCE over your .cfg maxplayers command.
Although your .cfg is EXECUTED every map change, MAXPLAYERS CANNOT BE CHANGED WHILE THE SERVER IS RUNNING. Thus the attempt to change maxplayers while the server is running (even if you load a new map) will not SUCCEED.

I've noticed while playing that there have been times when you're playing, gain a level (when you're in the higher levels, most likely) that you will put it into speed, hps, skill, that the points will be reset to 0 and you will only have that one point you just used. It seemed to happen randomly but after looking into it I found out that it happens EVERY single time you die. Was this intentional or just a bug?

I have also found a way to get around it, if you ever die, bring up the cnosole and tpye "reconnect". I would advise not doing this if you are about to turn into a zombie but only when you die.

If there is already a thread for this, I am sorry, but I searched all the way until the 1.1 pre-release thread and found nothing on this bug.

By the way, I'm new to the forums, but in no way to forum etiquitte or any basic rules for ANY forum you may visit. I havn't seemed to find a main rules post but I will look so I don't accidently break any rules.

I can't post this as a topic as it will not me stay logged in for long. Any help on this?

Sounds like a bug to me. Please post it in the bug forum. If you fear you're logged out before you've completed your post, simply copy it so you have a backup in case you really are logged out.
I haven't encountered this bug before, but it appears to be a server/client misunderstanding. Did this happen on all servers you've been playing on, including your own?
