is it normal when running a dedicated server, to have a reapeating messege of "maxplayers cannot be changed while a server is running."? also everytime the server changes maps the name changes back to default. what can i do to fix these problems?

This question is answered in the FAQ, just search max players.
As I've continually testified, editing your .cfg does not work. The Steam GUI overwrites and precedes anything in your .cfg, thus you must change maxplayers via the Steam GUI: When you start your dedicated server, select the drop down box next to "Max. players" and set it to the number you desire. -------------------- |

You DON'T NEED STEAM.EXE to start a dedicated server, missed that part??? I run 9 dedicated servers this way, without useing steam. locate the hlds.exe in your you@email.com\half-life folder, right click your hlds.exe and make a shortcut, then in the properties after the hlds.exe" add the following -console -game brainbread +ip 00.00.00.00 +port 00000 +maxplayers 12 +ip 00.00.00.00 +map bb_bayou_beta2 +mapchangecfgfile "server.cfg" just as it is, if you dont have an IP remove that part, yes the IP is listed twice, but if this is your home computer, do specify a port, so you can connect with another port to you own machine to play. If you use server.doc create a batch file and add this to it. Adjust the program files\Steam etc.. to fit your install C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\you@email.com\half-life\hlds.exe -console -game brainbread +ip 00.00.00.00 +port 00000 +maxplayers 12 +ip 00.00.00.00 +map bb_bayou_beta2 +mapchangecfgfile "server.cfg" -------------------- |

running thru steam is a resource hog, useing the hlds.exe is a dos based program that doesnt destroy your system resources

no no, when I said steam GUI, I meant the GUI that pops up when you run hlds.exe, entitled "Start Dedicated Server". Anything that appears in this GUI overwrites any setttings in your server.cfg Though the maxplayers command line parameter you suggested will work equally as well (since it starts the GUI with a provided number for the max.players field) -------------------- |

NO, the start dedicated server GUI is steam.exe, there is no pop up with hlds.exe as it runs in a dos based window

As you can see, HLDS presents you with this HUD:
![]() I've highlighted the MaxPlayers dropdown box, but really, anything in those drop down boxes overwrites anything in your server.cfg file. Though there may exist a way to run hlds.exe from dos prompt using switches to set the variables in the HUD, this is the way most people are familiar with setting up a dedicated server. -------------------- |

You really are not getting this simple process, as I said you dont need steam running to do this, you keep showing pictures of steam running useing steams server interface and then trying to say I am wrong, ???

I'm backing up the sarge on this one, you can run everything entirely independent of steam, much simpler, much easier, and better as far as memory usage. Use the hlds.exe

But you first must understand my main objective here: I am replying to the answer in this topic. Undoubtedly (as my friend runs a professional server) you can run hlds through the .exe using switches etc, however undoubtedly, our friend (old chicken) who posed the question is not doing it through this method. Thus, your information, as generally useful as it may be to others, is not applicable in this thread, because most likely, Old Chicken, is running his server through the GUI. I am not saying you are wrong, I am saying your information given the situation is not applicable. p.s. now, if my assumption was completely wrong and he is running it through dos command, I will be forced to concede, however, if he is running it through the GUI I have posted above surely you can recognize how my information is more concise given the situation. -------------------- |
