Greetings
I have installed Brainbread 1.2 in my Half-Life v1.1.1.0, but it says its outdated. When I start a LAN Server, few seconds after I'm in the game it freezes. ![]() I have Steam installed (because of HL2) but I do NOT intend to register HL1 or any other Game with Steam, because it pisses me off already that I was FORCED to install Steam with HL2. I own a legal copy of HL1, its just a matter of principle. It was mentioned in other threads that you need Steam for BrainBread. Why is that if I only want to play in my LAN? I don't want to use Steam, since I don't like being forced to give away control over my own games! It's bad enough I had to install it with HL2 (the last game I bought from valve for sure). Is there any way to play BrainBread without Steam? Or is there another cause to the crashes I described? Thanks for any advice V. P.S.: you can answer in english or german, I'm from germany. ![]() |

In order to play HL you must, at least once, contact the steam servers. After that you can install and play BB in offline mode.

But WHY? Does Steam update HL further than v1.1.1.0 or why else do I need to "contact the steam servers at least once"? It doesn't make sense to me, apart from mere chicane, that a mod should need Steam if HL itself runs fine without it (since HL is much older than Steam).
Does anyone know more than just "you need Steam". A REASON, perhaps? ![]() |

Why, if you are a major corporation that faces the on-going threat of piracy would you not want to have a main contact/validation server. By forcing you to connect to their main servers at least one, they garauntee that you have a valid CD-key and haven't pirated your copy. So unless you haven't torrented your copy of HL, you should really have nothing to worry about.

I just reject the concept of Steam, making installing and running their games depend on unlocking them via the Steam servers.
1) you are forced to have an internet connection for a primarily single player game. 2) if valve shuts down or chooses to discontinue support of an older game (read the licence - they reserved the right to do that!), you can't install this/all game(s) anymore. Installed games then can be played furher only until you will have to re-install them for some reason (i.e. changing your system, installing a new windows etc.). And look around - software companies die all the way, even big ones. 3) there are many examples of LEGAL cd keys which are rejected by Steam! You just happen to have a cd key someone has been keygen'ed by chance. 4) You can't sell Steam games second hand if you are through with them. 5) Don't know if it is already so with Steam (since I have a game pc and a seperate work pc), but prepare to have only those programs installed the game company wants to allow you. There are already programs that refuse to run/install if POTENTIALLY "bad" software like cd burning software, virtual cd drives or the like are installed. 6) who can say what information is submitted by steam apart from game information? A trojan that anyone who want to play is forced to install... perfect, isn't it? 7) after all, as far as I know there are finally cracks to run HL2 without Steam. Another copy "protection" that just annoys honest customers... This is quite off topic, I know. Just wanted to explain my reasons for rejecting steam. I confess I installed it because of HL2, but as I said, this was the last game I bought from valve - or any other company who jumps onto this train (HL2 is a good game, but not THAT indispensable. In the end, no game is.). When I'm through with HL2, good chance is that I kick it from my hard drive together with is "evil symbiote" Steam. Watch & think what you allow other people to do within your sphere of privacy. But thanks to you all for answering my question about BB! Now I have to consider if BB is worth to update HL1 over Steam (since it's installed anyway - for now). This post has been edited by Vortex on March 26, 2005 11:38 am |

You may install a second copy of HL1 via Steam.
I still don't know what is the problem about Steam. Sure, you shouldn't be forced to install it to play HL2, but Steam is a great platform for providing updates, cheat security and even chatting with friends (provided that the friends network works...). I don't think that there is a Steam-Conspiracy or whatever you fear. -------------------- Nickname: xxxDorsch

Brain Bread was created after the WON network was shutdown...therefore it was not designed for it? -------------------- ![]() |

Hmm... The steam-updated HL1 uses an improved netcode. It can send packets faster or what the hell, I really don't know.
Why can't we leave it with "It just doesn't work"? -------------------- Nickname: xxxDorsch

The newest Version 3.0 of SvenCoop works with both Steam and WON Versions of Half-Life. Unfortunately, BB doesn't. ![]() |

Besides the personal security and privacy matters, it's simply not sure that you can play Half-Life, say, three or five or TEN or however much years from now on. Once Valve stops Steam (like it stopped WON) or gets shut down itself, you can't re-install (update, etc...) any Steam games. Finito, muchachos. You should be able to choose using Steam, not being forced to use it. |

Well, let's use common sense here:
If you were a huge gaming company, supporting many games/mods through your servers, and inevitabely are going to shut down said servers, in-order to avoid mass confrontation of your customers and possible legal confrontation too, what would you do? If I were Valve, before shutting down the steam network, I would create a steam patch file that unencrypts and decompresses the .gcf files and allows you to access them locally without contacting the server. In lay terms, create a patch that overrides/eliminates the contacting of steam servers, so that the user can play without having an internet connection. -------------------- |

Wait, Wait, Wait, I have a solution....You don't like Valve using Steam so you get quick easy updates and there games don't get pirated? Oh well then don't friggin buy there products...Im sure they won't miss you with the other bajillion customers they have.
