Right - you go to www.kubuntu.org, an uber awesome Linux distribution (a derivative of Ubuntu), with KDE, and install it on any ammount (I would say at least 5 gigs) of unpartitioned space on your HDD. You can run the Live CD, which will let you see it for yourself (what it looks like), and you can play around with it a bit...
You download the 700 meg ISO, burn it to a disc, and go. If you install it, it will (should) see your Windows installation, and make Kubuntu a dual boot to Windows, so you choose what OS to load up every time you start your computer. Can you give us the very basic version of how linux is better than windows please (i.e. boot time, in-game performance, stability...)? I'm undecided whether to make the switch or not... This post has been edited by SDWBOSS on September 12, 2007 09:42 am -------------------- ![]() |

Switch? I wouldn't make the switch, as Windows plays CSS far better (since its DirectX and Microsoft, the assholes they are, didn't make it multi-platform) even though you could run it in an application environment called "wine", which emulates Windows programs.
Just dual-boot it, and have both OS's go into a hybrid, where you can choose which one to boot into at boot time. Linux is very stable, possibly the most stable OS in the world - and the boottime has been quite fast for me... About 10 seconds (plus the actual booting process of the computer itself, checking for HDDs, etc.), more or less, depending what Desktop environment you have, etc. |

Does that mean that windows would still be running in the background, with Linux running alongside it? If that's the case, surely that would mightily decrease the performance? 10 seconds is very fast though - Just from the POST beep, my pc makes it to the password screen in ~34 seconds (a long time before POST though ![]() (amd 3 ghz 2 cores, 4gb 800ram, 7200rpm 160gb harddrive) -------------------- ![]() |

Really? I've used 3 copies on windows on 3 machines, one was illegal ( ![]() Do you use any tweaks/settings/BIOS settings to make your boot faster? -------------------- ![]() |

start, run, msconfig, then go the last tab and untick anything that you dont want windows to load at startup (donīt worry, you can still start those programs like normal), then go to the tab before last, click on hide windows services, and do the same, but remember to leave the antivirus services ticked or your AV wonīt load.
Thatīs the fastest way to boost your startup time. Sure theīre are dirtier ways, but this is an easy to do one, enjoy : ) |

I was just about to post this information, hes right it does significantley boost your startup speed. Mine has gone from around 40 seconds from being able to run Windows Messenger to around 25 seconds thats from pressing the power button.

I've already done all of this - I'm not completely useles... hehe. Also, when you say "the tab before last" that does not apply to me, as I have Windows Xp Corporate edition and the tab before last is labelled "tools" However, I've been unsure as to whether to disable the "Nvidea Display Driver Service" - will this disable the driver itself? -------------------- ![]() |

Yes, and as for your question about linux/dual booting:
No, Windows does not run in the background. It ASKS you, (bootloader), which OS you want to start up every and each time you start up the computer... You switch with the arrow keys in the boot menu, and hit enter on the one you want to start up, OR, it starts up the selected boot menu option after about 10 seconds... The two OS's don't run along side each other, you simply have to reboot to choose the other OS. |

Gotcha.
Nearly all non-MS services, except anti virus update service, and Diskeeper defragmenter service (both are necessary for those programs to run) are stopped, and when I just switched my pc on, from the power button click to the password screen was exactly 40 seconds. (nvidea driver service stopped aswell ![]() Still a bit slow you think? *edit* idling with IE running, 22 processes running, if this helps at all. Hey, the only reason why Linux isn't as good as Windows is that it isn't compatible with most programs that noobs that use windows use. And there is a way to get it to work, but why would a noob windows user want to go through the work to get the programs to work (WINE)
