Now hang on a minute - who here has undertaken an extensive study into cutting trees, car exhausts or production of milk.

Smachine, gasses are measures in Kg because as you know every substance known has a mass - not necessarily weight.

Nikku, we don't know what the ozone layer was like before we could record it. Indeed, there was a time on the Earth in which we had no Ozone layer and the co2 layer was hundreds of times higher than now, and live still functioned on the planet i.e. the temperature was not intolerably high, and the Earth was not flooded.

bacon333, noone anywhere will ever really say that cars are good for the environment - just less harmful than milk - remember, to get milk you have to raise and transport and feed cows, and breed them, so 1.2 Kg of co2 for a glass of milk is not that high (606 litres or 0.6 cubic metres, about the volume of a socks drawer.

Not that I'm an expert, but someone somewhere has used basic logic to come up with these figures. Cars produce a lot of nasties, but the only greenhousegas I'm aware they produce is co2, though you certainly cannot breath the fumes in.

Yeah ,but you measure wight in kg's I guess . We used liters and cubiccentimeters for all the gases mostly in chemistry so its wierd. Also you cant really live without food so that fails as a way of limiting CO2 thats produced, but cars on the other side could save a lot of it by using electric power instead of fuel. Also saving plants and trees is a way of aproaching this issue

Yeah of course, but an alternative way is to exercise less, consume less food and drive more instead of walking. Of course, this is a stupid solution, but it does make sense.

The volume of gases and liquids are measured in litres and cm3, but the mass of them in always measures in Kg according to le Système International d'Unités.

If you're in Comprehensive school or High School, in the lower years they don't encourage measuring liquids' + gases' masses because it confuses some people.

*EDIT* forgot to mention, in Earth's gravity 1 Kg mass of sugar is 1 "Kg" in weight. On the moon though, the same 1Kg of sugar will weigh much less than 1 Kg in weight - it will not weigh as much, but will still be as hard to "move around" and push/pull.

Wait so yo are saying pushing object on a moon will be need the same power as on earth ? Or I get you wrong ?

Nope that's exactly right biggrin.gif so a really heavy boulder on Earth won't be heavy on the moon, but it could still crush you if someone pushed it on top of you ohmy.gif

v confusing methinks

Are you actually beeing serious or what ? Becose objects get easyer to push or move as the gravity gets smaller.

You see, the mass of objects stays constant no matter the gravity.

Ok, for example, imagine you're in space, and you're floating around, and some guy bumps into you. To get this doofus away, you have to push him, and he will still be hard to push away with any speed. Then of course someone throws a football at you. It doesn't just stop in your hands, but send you flying back into a wall, because it still had its mass and "heavyness" to push you back with, but no "weight" anywhere.

(Weight is just the name for the force that pushes mass down to the ground)

Although, yes you can lift a heavy set of weights much easier on the moon, but to throw them still takes a lot of effort, and they would still hurt if they hit you ohmy.gif

There may be lots of gas emmisions from nature itself and milk and such, but the shit coming from cars are coming in such a fast pace its outweighing the rest.

Yup. Even if cars emit much less co2 (which seems likely) they still have a ton of rubbish that nature doesn't produce - the lead on its own probably outweighs nature's co2. The next time you walk by a road, even a quite one, wait till a car goes past, then take a deep breathe and smell the air. Not pleasant is it?

In 20 or 30 years time we will look back on those days just like looking back on nuclear radiation in the 40s and 50s and think "how the hell did they not realise they were killing themselves?"

That is the problem of hindsight - you only get it just after you need it sad.gif

they actually made a hybrid that goes up to 40 on electricity alone... that could be the future of transportation and near solve global warming... most of your time while driving is spent under 60 (unless your constantly breaking the speed limit by like 20 mph) so if we could get hybrids to go that fast the amount of co2 produced by cars would be nearly eliminated... or at least in theory

read that in the same article as the energy effcient bulb thing

When He opened the fourth seal I heard the voice of the fourth living being say, "Come!" Then I looked and saw an ash-colored horse. The name of its rider was Death, and Hades followed him closely. Authority was granted them over a quarter of the earth, to kill with the sword, with famine, with plaque, and by means of the wild beasts of the earth.

actually in california they have hybrids that omit nearly no pollutants at all. Here's the catch: Because of the US governments clean air act the cars can't be sold legally in any other state.

Yeah hybrids are awsome cars - with the exceptions of one. It's a Lexus luxury saloon, and it reaches the dizzy heights of 15 mpg (on British fuel) with the help of its electirc motor. That's just under half of the average high compact - medium sports cars' efficiency in the UK (for example, the VW Golf GT TDI)
