While I do agree that boxing is over-rated, it still teaches you stance and breathing techniques that I believe is pretty vital. I do think that you should learn something on top of it though, an actual art.

You guys are forgetting the best kind of fighting style, there are 2, one useful for guys which is "Kick-em-in-the-nuts-n-run-like-hell Kwan Do"

Then for girls theres the "Grab-a-tit-and-while-they-are-in-shock-from-the-good-feeling-run-like-hell Arts"

Best ones ever.

Not funny?

The best thing you could do for cardio if your really that concerned about fighting, run either on the treadmill, or my favorite the elliptical trainer but run with 10 or five pounds waits on your hands.

Run for about 20 minutes on a "Interval" setting (Hills, no hills, hills, no hills)

trust me, in 2 minutes, you'll want to stop. But do it for the whole 20 minutes. In about a week or two, raise it 5 minutes, and in 2 month, it will probably take you a good 40 or 50 minutes to get tired.

Or you could spar? Then you get all the advantages of a heavy workout and you improve your timing and technique aswell smile.gif

All good fighting styles promote good breathing patterns - I've never thought too hard about it, it just comes naturally to me.

Even so, fighting for a 2 minute round with flying kicks will get anybody knackered very quickly - back to the good breathing again for rapid recovery.

I some how doubt that. I took a couple of martial arts class around my parts, and they never taught proper breathing. They showed you how to land a punch on a target that isn't moving, though! In case I ever want to defend against a person in a vegetable state, you know those people are ready to spring at you when you're not looking.

Maybe the ones in my area are just shitty, more so than others. I don't know.

Look if your smart, and you understand the tactical situation and you fight strategically, then you don't need anyone to show you where to punch, or where to hit, how to think, where to move, how to move that way, etc. Fighting is fighting, as redfield said, there are many classes that "Show" you how to punch and kick, but there are very few that can teach you how to use those "dances" in a combat situation.

I've found that when I attempted to use my Tae Quan Do training in an actual fistfight, I was getting the shit beat out of me trying to go forward with the procedures I learned in class. Halfway through I decided to just focus on the situation from a different perspective and I was faring much better.

Unless you can perform Martial Arts in a live combat exorcise or situation, then it is useless where basic thought and well thrown punches will exceed. But, I will agree that A black belt who has trained for years in any Martial Arts, even Judo, is better prepared then some punk from the streets. If not because of superior the body control, then the actual fact of being taught the specific weak points of ones body.

But, I digress...

There are a few reasons I don't visit the forums as often as I used to, they are as follows:

1) I really don't have a lot of time.

2) My hardrive is failing

3) The forums honestly frustrate me to a point I cannot stand it, I've tried to help, I've tried to set people straight, but apparently, the health of these forums only matters to a few people. Thats just sad, most of us have grown along with these forums and along BB and frankly its disgusting to see the way you guys act sometimes...

until you pull your acts together, don't expect to see me around much.

I find in sparing, they often stop before any remote injury has occured, so your not punching your absolute hardest or thinking your absolute sharpest. just my .02

And Chace, they can teach you everything, but they can't always be there to tell you the exact move, take it in... chew it.

There are a lot of so-called "martial arts" schools, particularly Tae Kwon Do or Kickboxing that are not about fighting - they are there primarily to promote good fitness and health, and to give kids somehting to work for, and that's great.

A "proper" martial arts school will teach you to fight effectively. In a fight, I would call upon my Tae Kwon Do skills without hesitation - I don't think about moves I am performing or where to hit - because I have been trained so long in Tae Kwon Do, it comes almost naturally to me. For example, somebody you don't know is coming to me to invade my personal space, I don't wait for him to strike first, then step back, then block, then punch to his motionless chest... If I see he's hostile, it's a side/turning kick to the head before he gets chance to throw a punch.

Thankfully, I don't do a lot of "real" fighting, but I got bullied in school a lot by a bigger boy (same year), but after drilling counter-punches for months and months, he tried to hit me and ended up with a dislocated elbow and shoulder and was on his back looking up at the floor.

There will always be rubbish school in any style I guess, but please *edit* please please please! */edit* do not trash all "martial arts" or particualarly Tae Kwon Do, as I believe that if you have trained and strive for more strength, speed and precision in your movements, they do improve your whole life.

That pretty much ties it up. Although in certain situations for me it wasnt best to use my instincts.

These gang kids tried to attack me the other day.

Whooped their asses, of course.

But anyways, 2 had knives and the rest had their "fists" if you could call them that. I would call them giant gold-plated objects with opposable parts... >_< so many rings.

Anywho, there were 5, two of em tried to get me and I just kinda reacted in the way my reflexes made me... bad idea. I jumped back only to be met by a shoe to the back of the head. Ow. So I decided that wasnt the best thing to do, so I just started putting all my former training into it. Tae Kwan Do as well as regular combat training from the Corps.

It was pathetic from that point on.

I whooped their asses so badly.

Well of course you "whooped their asses" - if a sensible person had know you had military training they wouldn't try and fight you.

It is suprising how easy it is (relatively speaking) to take on multiple opponents, if they are merely "street kids"

When you started knocking them down, did you notice their mates backing off?

Personally, I gernerally think its a bit stupid to go against 2 knife wielders, but looks like you judged the situation right and came through OK smile.gif

Kids these days talk so much shit, but don't do anything.

It was fun. The two kids with knives started to double team me, I knocked both of em on their asses then took their knives and threw them on top of a building.

Afterwards, the other 3 guys kinda started backin off and then all 5 of them charged at me... then I just tackled all of them :/

They charged in a line so i just held out my arms, crouched down and ran at them

They all fell down.

So then I pulled out one of my kabars and they ran away, I imagine they were thinking "Thats a big ass knife... RUN!"

I imagine it was a bit faster than what it seems from reading that - well done on throwing away the knives though.

Lots of people focus so much on "grabbing" for the knife that they forget you can just "knock them back on their asses" smile.gif

When did this happen? Was it especially violent or more of a scuffle?
