Warning to windows fanboys, the following thread may get you uncontrollably upset...
Ok, before I start, I just want to mention that I use Linux for most of my computer needs. It runs good on a pentium 2, with 100 megs of ram. (really). And it looks really nice, and looks very comparable to Vista. It's only problem is it can't play too many games, which is where Wine comes in, to substitute as a windows emulator... works with Steam. Ok. I overheard someone talking about this, and how 'great' it is. Anyway, so, first of all, here's the link: http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/default.htm Now. This is a program you can install on your Windows box from Microsoft. I believe it works on XP and Vista. It "protects" and "secures" your computer, from viruses, trojans, etc. Now, don't you think that your system should be fine without having to buy MORE shit from microsoft, after installing a 400 dollar copy of M$ vista, with all of it's DRM shit they threw into the mix, to restrict you from what you can do anyway? Think about it like this: You buy a new car. It runs fine, for the first ten minutes, but then it starts to break down, and fall apart. You go back to the dealership and ask why. They tell you you need to buy a special part, that costs an extra $7,000 for your car to work properly, even after paying $25,000 for your new car. Even though they already told you it was the most durable car they had, they tell you this afterwards. So, you buy the part, and it starts to take a lot more gas than it used to. Even though the car used a lot of gas to begin with. I think this is the biggest scam Microsoft has pulled off yet. Making their own antivirus sollutions, when with a little more effort with their programming, and testing the security a little more, they could have put this in vista. But no, they need to make MORE money. And slow down your system even more. Instead of requiring 1 gig of ram for your system to actaully work, you need 1.5 gigs. I have Linux running on a pentium 3 with 256 megs of ram. I can watch movies on the internet, play some games, and do anything any normal person would do. However, Microsoft believes you need 1 gig of ram, a very powerful computer, and a lot of money just to browse the web, and read e-mail. Which is what most people do anyway. Discuss. Windows Fanboys have been warned. /end rant |

*sigh* Microsoft isn't evil... do you have some problem with understanding what people say or something?
I just said that they're ripping people off, by forcefully reaming crappy software down people's throats, and making DRM look good with a new skin. EDIT: Hey, have you thought of this? Maybe you're the crazy one. Going totally nuts when someone says something bad about Halo... At least I made a point other than "Why do you think Halo has more players?" Back on topic, I installed Windows Vista Ultimate X86 (the 32-bit version) and perfromance was not awful, but not exactly nippy. Bear in mind this is with a 3gugglehurts AMD dual core with 4 jigawotsits of ram. Startup took forever, and my aging hard drive would never cease to blip and crunch, even at idle. On top of that, this behemoth chewed up 2GB of my ram... idling!
I have never seen such a waste of computer resources... I made an "emergency" switch to a custom windows XP build, and have been toying with the idea of going linux. My question is, with Vista definately out the window, is Linux the best choice for an operating system? Should I stay with my trusty XP (solid as a rock, btw)? -------------------- ![]() |

Hmm.. hard to say. It would be the best alternative performance wise, as well as price wise..
However, I would need to know what you do on a regular basis. You can also dual-boot, btw... (i.e. have two OS's you can choose from, when you boot the computer) |
