Ive noticed ALOT of posts on the forums about this, and i, being the genuis that i am also did the same thing.. The site is a bit misleading, you actually tried to download the wrong thing...

There are 2 differant downloads at the moment for windows.. Windows server and windows client. You need to be sure to download the client..

errors: I go to run PE as soon as it loads the map it crashes to desktop and i have to restart to try ita gain/play another mod..

-- You either have server installed or you tried to exe client over top of server, delete /penemy/ and reinstall the client.

When i exit penemy i cant play any hl mods/games, it just wont load.
You either installed it wrong or did a bad exit on the game.
Ctrl + alt + del and go to your task manager, kill the process hl.exe and it will work.

I encountered this problem and posted it in another thread. The way to work around this is that if you have Windows XP, right click on your Half-Life shortcut and go to compatability. Tell it to be compatable with Windows 98 and then accept. Restart your computer and try again. It should work now.

im not sure about that, if you put down your pc stats, ill see what i can do to match it with my spare pc(os/etc) and see if i can accomplish the same bug. I havnt really had too many crashing problems, i did have one that exploited the hell out of my graphics card(no walls) then it crashed. but that was more of an ati thing.

Just post what you have and ill see what i can do to force the same thing to happen to maybe see what the problem is.

You might want to see the other thread about crashing and dropping to desktop, that solution seems to help many people

strange, i have been running win2k for a long time and i have yet to have this mod crash on me when i make a config. make sure you are using the latest graphics drivers...

Set it so it is configured for windows 98 and it should work.

also just to let anyone know, PE will crash on start of a game if you have the new SoundBlaster Audigy Beta drivers. took me a while to figure out that was the prob, i guess it crashes PE and not the other HL mods because PE plays mp3's. just guessing on that though.

you could use the beta drivers and PE if you set HL to win 98/ME compatibility mode in XP, but then every time u leave HL you would have to also terminate the HL.exe in the processes window, because it for some reason still runs in the background with compatibility mode on.

Have you tried deactivating the MP3 playback in "Multiplayer->Customize->Advanced Options" ?

naa, but why would i want to do that (though i kind of whish i did now so i could pinpoint if that was acually it)


though, it seems for some reason that its never normal when you try to uninstall the beta and reinstall the normal drivers. you have to install the normal ones over the beta ones, because if you uninstall the beta drivers the normal drivers dont dect a soundcard after, its odd.

i just formatted again recently though so im skipping out on the beta drivers.
