Any update on getting the high utilization down?
Running on Linux, with 16 players, I get a server fps of 5 frames and pingtime of 250+
I'd be happy to run a PE Public Server, but like this, it's no fun for the players.
Hardware: 1.8GHz P4 and 512MB of memory.

Any other server administrators having the same problem?
I hope the PE team takes my problem seriously.

Regards,

Ryback

Timmy,

I'm not sure if it matters if you use a desktop or a "real" server for running this game. But to be honest, it's running on a Dell desktop PC. It's equipped with 1.8GHz P4 processor and 512MB of memory. Distribution is Gentoo 1.4rc3, first stage install (which means everything is optimised compiled for P4). Should be enough to handle the game. I don't have problem running other mods, only this particular mod gives very high utilization. Previous posts indicate it has something to do with the (complexity of the) maps.
So I'm very curious to know how your server will perform. Especially, use the "stats" command, which sums up the processor utilization of the current gameserver. Even with no users, it uses 1-4%.
Can you post your results in this forum?

Thanks

Ryback

the reason I wanted to know what kind of system you where running is because I am running mine on a 1.8 with win2k, 768 pc800 ram, GeForce4 ti4600 video. well all top of the line sys I built, well the 1.8 is a bit slow now. But I am getting the same thing max about 40fps when it is just me running around, and around 20fps in a firefight. but I think thats because it is off of win2k and I am using the same box to play. I have not checked the processor utilization, and I forgot to turn on my VNC, remote to my box before I came into work today. But I will check it tonight. But I should have it on a high end server soon to test it out, and see if it is a processor hog. I get real good pings but thats because I have a high end cable modem and only host a 8 person server. But depends on your connecting you are running you may want to drop down the max players. I am thinking I may just put it on my Linux box, well same box but duel boot. and test it. And have someone go into it and see if there is any difference. Also if you are running it in Linux, you doing it in cmd only or in x windows?

It runs on a completly stripped down Linux. Only ssh as service. The HLDS runs using screen, so you can log off and log on and get your console back.
The server is setup with max 16 players. If I connect and I'm the only player, no problem. I get a ping of 14 (server is pretty close to my ISP). Around 8-10 players, you'll notice the CPU load is getting too high (90-100%) and the fps drops and pings rise.
I'd be very interested in results of your linux test. I hope you can setup a 16 player server and attract 16 players to stress it.

Also wondering why none of the PE members is reacting to this thread.

yeah once I have our main sever up I will test it out for you and get all the people I know who have the game on at one and monitor all that, and get back to you. I noticed last night that I was running around 60 - 70%, but I know a good part of that is just windows. but once I get it on linux I be able to get more of a accurate number.

ryback, what else are you running on this system? Any other servers, i see you said ssh. What version of ssh? Along with are you running sendmail + user for httpd(ran as root is a security issue along with the obcession it likes of using ultimate CPU).

A P4 1.8ghz is plenty to run any mods server, when i ran a server b4 it came public i didnt have too much of a problem no matter how many connected and it ran some pretty high usage shit.

The server was running "dedicated", which means no other services except SSH. Not sure about ssh version, the latest that comes with Gentoo for sure.
System is running Gentoo 1.4rc3. Compiled from stage 1, optimized for P4 systems. It definitely is related to the Public Enemy mod. I run another mod now (ToD 1.2.0) without a problem.
Any suggestions welcome. I also hope Timmy got some performance data from his PE linux server.

Thanks

I was wondering if you have had a change to do a little test yet.
I took my server down as long as this high utilitization is not fixed.
Hope to hear from you soon.

yeah it runs fine, but now with linux is the box with crash if you are hacking the term. So I not really done much with it. I just set it up and running it. But will work on it more when 2.0 comes out. But as it looks it runs good on linux not to much Utilization.
