Lol, that news reporter would say anything!
Mercury = bad. Why do you think most countries have banned mercury thermometers in schools?

well it could possibly be the non ionic mercury (ionic is the poisonous nerve agent we all know and love, but the non ionic is just harmless metal)

Both quick silver as free metal and its compounds are toxic. What nerve agent?

Erm, doesn't matter about any "nerve agent" - it's the fact that it is a heavy metal and so accumulates in parts of the body such as the brain. Not good to have a head full of mercury. This is also why materials such as lead are toxic to our stupid fat and greedy kids who suck heavy metals ^^

Im just interested as I read that inorganic mercury compounds cannot pass blood-brain barrier easily so they don't cause much neurological problems compared to organic ones.

actually metallic mercury is virtuously harmless when in the right stage. I have seen a teacher drink some to prove that fact, and then explain why you should never drink it because it may not be the stage. Which is kind of stupid to do the lesson that way but it worked /shrug

nope there is a harmless form a mercury (would not recommend trying to find it its hard as hell and more then likely surrounded by the ionic mercury) *please note* it is called mercury but it is extremely chemically different and isn't an element the reason that it was thought to be mercury is because it contains mercury as a base element

Maybe its my non english chemical education, but you say its the metallic mercury, so by that you mean the free metallic Hg and thats the only free form it has, trough it isn't that dangerous when swallowed compared to much higher danger of its vapor, but still its one of the most toxic mercury forms. Maybe you are talking about HgS, which isn't water soluble and is not toxic. trough that isnt a free metallic Hg.

It's safe to say that if you find some mercury, don't drink it! tongue.gif
