I wanted to see what size server you all would prefer to see. Our current server is set to 14 player max. Hardware wise we are running a Athlon 2100+ with 512 megs of DDR on a Nforce2 board. And we have it hooked up to a T-1 line. So with that said, what size of a server would you all like to see? blink.gif

i think 16-18 is a good number if it can handle it i dunno servers so smile.gif but i think theres a respawn bug for 16 players so make it 14 for now prolly

I don't think running 18 players would be a issue for our server. We are only using 3% CPU utilization on average with 14 people in it right now biggrin.gif but the player spawning thing is a bummer, so we will keep it at 14 untill the next patch, thanks for the quick response laugh.gif

your server stats are more then enough to run atleast 2 14 person PE servers espically if you have linux.

Average server uses between 2.4KB/s and 7.8KB/s a player(depending on rates)..

Your average T1 line is 768kbit/s which is 96KB/s
Since T1 is basically like cable it doesnt get slower as more get on, you can use dual nics to get twice as fast(tada!)

Anyways on one nic, your looking at about.. 22 or so max, maybe 24(depending on peoples rates/locations, as if its a US server, DE wont use nearly as much traffic(3.4~5.6)

Dual nics.. Easily 28 total.

I am running a 14 player Linux server on a pIII 1.26ghz w/ 512mb ram on a T1. I might bump it up to 16. I might even be able to get it up to 18. I think that for you specs, 14 would be too little. What I suggest is set the max to a number you're comfortable with and then raise it until lag becomes an issue. Good luck!

i havent seen more than 1 or 2 servers that have a max limit of more than 12. especially not with decent bandwidth. sad.gif

i'm on the west coast though. maybe all the larger servers are on the east coast....?

ive played at your server a few times salm, i got flamed for swearing :-x when someone in there was spamming the hell out of me :-\

I'm running a PE Beta 1.01 server on Gentoo Linux.
512MB memory, 1.8GHz P4.
Utilization is 100% with 16 players. Also, ping times climb to 100-150 for all players. I tried the small map and utilization drops back to 5% with 16 players.
Any idea what it can be? Also turned off metamod/pingbooster, but no difference.

I think it the source of this problem are the high_poly p_models. They aren´t really low_poly and this reduces speed.

But I understand not everybody is experiencing this high util? Or is it only on Linux? Anything I can do as a server admin?

Still wondering if a solution to the high utilization is in sight. Otherwise, I can't keep this server running together with some other servers.

For the record: High Util is only with the default maps. Not with the small testmap (pe_vip).

It's possible that we get HL to its limits with the PE maps so the util goes versus 100% if the map reaches a certain complexity. If that's the case we won't be able to change that sad.gif (we allready reached the model limit due to tons of entitys in the maps)

Ok, I can understand that. What I don't understand is that not everyone has the problem (reading replies in this thread, some are having low utilization).
For the popularity of the mod, it's not good to have such high utilization. Providers, like the one I'm working for, have to decide whether they support it or not. A game that takes 100% CPU is not commercially interesting.

server fps: 5-6
cpu util: 90-100%
in game pingtimes 200-250 for every player
metamod/adminmod/hlguard installed
no pingbooster

hardware:
P4 1.8GHz
512MB memory
Gentoo Linux 1.4rc3
