The mysterious building will be revealed; the zombies will return to the story (FINALLY); the world will end; people will die. That f****** camp which I backed myself into will be left behind.

I'd just like to say I love your work, there aren't many stories that can actually get me to read more of, yet yours does.

Can't wait if you ever do post more.

I'd been at the camp for about six days when the soldiers started to mobilise. So far, no one had been released from the camp, despite the initial claims that we'd only be detained for a week, then we'd be free to go. But a few people - the first few who managed to get out of the city before the roads were clogged with the ruined vehicle, the first people to be led under armed guard to this strange collection of tents that housed us refugees - had been here for about nine days. Any questions had been left unanswered. The best reply we ever got was that "The situation had changed." Our time of confinement was now "classified information".

When I first arrived the soldiers had seemed confident - startled, rattled and scared of the horrors that had taken Heavensgate, but confident that they could deal with the threat; they were the United States army after all. But that confidence seemed to have faded. Now the soldier's faces - when they werent obscured by gas masks - were pale and drawn. The initial shock of the crisis had surely worn off by now; I couldnt see why they suddenly seemed so much more worried than before. Now the distant suprise and dismay that they had felt when our city had fallen had been replaced by something more terrifying, more horrific than even Heavensgate. It was a subtle difference, but I recognised it - it was a little like the expressions of most of the refugees. Something had gone wrong. But what? They wouldnt tell us.

There were rumours though; Second hand tales of overheard conversations between our guards. Alleged radio broadcasts recieved on a portable CB, or on a car radio. People with mobile phones getting messages from the outside. Some of the stories were false - probably, at least. Mobile phones didnt work around the base, and radios didnt pick much of anything up. Apparently some new equipment the base was using scrambled the signals too much. No one knew whether the interference was intentional or not. No one knew what was going on out there beyond the rumours, and they contradicted each other so often it was impossible to tell the truth.

I'd heard that whatever had happened in Heavensgate had spread. That reports of dead people attacking the living were coming in from all over the state. That there were signs of the plague in New York, Washington DC, all over the damn country. Rumours that the government was ordering a full scale evacuation of the populace of rural areas to locate to designated "protection zones". Rumours that the government had given orders to kill every person south of the state line. That the button had been pushed, that a nuke was on the way to cleanse the infection with radioactive fire, or rumours that the cause had been found - that it was the work of islamic extremists, the actions of a rogue russian general, a natural phenomenon caused by solar radiation, a chemical spill at Axis labs, an experiment gone wrong. Depending on the day, the world was either already over, well on its way, or the situation was completely contained. Who knew?

We didnt. But the soldiers did. And that was why the dull horror on their faces was all the more terrifying - how could we be sure? Fortunately I didnt think that most people had noticed their subdued air, and that the refugees still clung to hope. Even though the traffic within the base had seemingly slowed to a standstill - compared with the bustle of my first day, it was a ghost town. The occasional helicopter headed out towards the city, every so often a jeep full of soldiers would leave the base. Sometimes they'd come back. There were rumours that soldiers were deserting, taking their vehicles and guns and ammo and supplies and driving off to make their own attempt at survival. All in all, the picture wasnt very reassuring. But now the soldiers were mobilising, the base a hive of activity once more, a purpose given to the fighting men of America.

The guard on the camp had been reduced - no more patrols, just a couple of squads around the outskirts since yesterday. Now it became apparent why, they were needed for whatever operation they had in the works. And finally, as the first transports moved out of the base and onto the road, as the helicopters rose into air and the soldiers left us behind, the purpose became apparent to us. Most of us, the refugees still hard to believe that we Americans had been brought to the same level as the people we saw on TV - were crowded against the chain wire fence, straining to see what was going on, why our protectors or were they our captors? It wasnt clear were leaving us behind. It was easy to see where they were going once we saw the direction they turned in once they hit the road. Their destination could be easily seen for miles around by the black scar it left on the sky. All of us in the camp knew where they were going.

A few of the skeleton crew of soldiers remaining on the base approached us, walking over to the chain link fence with their guns readily available but not aimed at anything in particular. One had a loudspeaker in hand, and began speaking into it, his voice amplified tenfold.

Please move away from the fence. Please disperse. His voice was robbed of any emotion or personality by the equipment. A military operation is under way and order shall be restored soon.
Whats going on? someone yelled from the crowd. It was taken up by most of us, myself included. We all knew where they were going. We wanted to know why.
The soldier lowered his loudspeaker, and stalked off back towards the camp. His squadmates remained, watching us as we repeatedly shouted our demand for information. Shortly the soldier returned, with someone in what looked like officers uniform in tow. The officer took the loudspeaker off the soldier.
I am Lieutenant Daventhorp, the current ranking officer of this base. Firstly I would like to thank you all for your patience with the measures we have been forced to take, for the patriotism and spirit you have shown in persevering in the face of this catastrophe. he said.
We quieted down a little for that, but we weren't satisfied. The demands still continued though, but thankfully the lieutenant answered them:

The mobilisation of troops and resources that you have just observed is the first part of our operation to retake the city of Heavensgate. Initially this will be a rescue operation, to locate civilians we know to be trapped within the city, but rest assured we will eliminate every last one of the hostiles which have overrun your home, and make it safe once more.

A cheer went up throughout the crowd. I almost joined in, but I remembered how the soldiers and police whod tried to hold the city had fared. I thought about how many more of those things there would be now, about how much more damage the streets and roads and buildings would have suffered how deadly a trap the soldiers were walking in to.

truly amazing. I can almost touch the tensity of the people. I can't wait for some good old action in the city, I really hope I get to read a little of what's happening in there.
Oh while I rememeber. The military operation, it better be stationed above ground. I can't stand any more of the stories where the military make small camps at ground level with some sandbags, almost inviting the undead in. The ideal thing would be a roof, or some barricaded buildings. Like this:
Scyscraper. all entrances are barricaded, and I mean barricaded, so that nothing can enter. Perhaps welded shut with metal sheets, or flodded with concrete. The main base of operations is in one of the stories above ground level, with sandbagged gunposts in the windows.
In the first floor, there will be rope ladders readt\y to sling out of the windows, ensuring easy entrances and exits with no danger of the undead coming in. This could be used for getting civilllians in, or to get out on patrols though the most would probably go by helicopters ont the roof.
