Dawn on the City of the Damned, formerly Windsor, Ontario.

The outbreak was literally overnight. Hospitals receiving bite patients and people with inexplicably gruesome injuries caused by other people, by the reports. Hand in hand with the attacks was the volume of murders and missing persons reports being received by the WCPD. Every officer across the city was scuttled in the vain attempt to capture so called 'wild men' responsible for violent murders in the street, reportedly by biting and tearing the victims to pieces, sometimes alone, sometimes in hordes. It was a night of horrible terror for the police force of the city. Radio transmissions cut short by screaming officers begging for their lives, muffled sounds of violent struggles and gunshots, with more calls incoming reporting the new attacks. They never stood a chance.

By dawn the city was overrun, survivors waking at dawn found a war being waged on their front lawns between people who were formerly neighbours. Corpses and casings littered the streets, blood and bulletholes across walls. The media was gone, the radio was gone, phone service was out, the only beacons of hope people had were their cell phones and the safety of their own houses. No one knew if help was on the way, or if even anyone knew about their trouble. The horror that this might be worldwide struck a lot of people, and a select few commited suicide to escape the sure apocalypse.

Chapter 1: Decay and Irony

Hurry, hurry! Open the door! Please! They're coming!

Charles looked at the door, pounding in it's frame from the person on the other side. He looked from his post to the main room, and headed to the door to let the frantic survivor in. He unbolted the door and opened it a crack. Without warning, a panicked young woman bolted into the house past him, knocking the door ajar, him over. Scrambling to his feet, he looked out the door to see a small pack of the undead charging the house. In a nearly movie quality professional swipe, he took up his holstered Baretta M92 in his hand and fired into the horde, killing the lead and sending the immediate followers into a tumble, buying enough time to shut and bolt the door again.

He could feel his heart dancing in his chest from a mixture of adrenaline and panic, his hand lay open on the ground, his gun resting upon it. He could feel the dead pounding against the door on the other side, but he knew they weren't able to get in. Breathing a heavy sigh of relief, he looked angrily at the girl that had come barging in and almost cost them their safety. She was huddled against the foyer wall, covering her ears and crying silently. He made his way from his position against the door to the girl, holstering his firearm once again.

"You almost got us all killed in here." he said gruffly, reaching down and grabbing the girl by the arm, pulling her to her feet. She cried out and shrunk away, as if expecting to be hit. "I'm sorry, but I knew people were here and they were chasing me, I didn't know what to do, I came here and, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" she gasped between sobs. Another person from inside the house finally came to the front in response to the recent gunshots and saw the situation. Charles looked over at the investigator, Nathan, and back to the girl, releasing her arm.

"You got a name?" he asked, as Nathan stepped into the foyer to peek out a window and inspect the area. "Leah, Leah McDowell." she replied, her sobbing and shaking slowly dissipating. Nathan stepped away from the windows and pated Charles on the shoulder. "So, we got another survivor, eh Chuck?" he queried, his uncannily consistant smile on his face. Even in such times he was able to smile, it was almost convincing proof that he really was insane.

"We've got more people inside, I'll introduce you." Charles said, motioning the girl into the house. He began to follow after her, when Nathan stopped him. "Hey Chuck, guess who you shot out there?" he asked, a bizarre expression coming across his face, as if it was a mix between dispair and joy. Charles shrugged at the question. "I don't know, I didn't bother to look at who I was shooting, it would have taken away from the task at hand, shooting dead cannibals." he replied, a hint of annoyance in his voice, as he turned back to the house.

"It was James." said Nathan. Charles stopped in his tracks, and he recalled the incident moments ago. He recalled the face, albeit horribly mangled and half eaten, he recognized the truth. It was James after all. Charles looked at his gun he carried, and a smile then crossed his face as well. James had always been the militant one of the group, a love for military and firearms. It was James himself that gave Charles his gun to defend the door while he left to gather more supplies and ammo. The irony of being killed by ones own gun left a smile on Charles' face the rest of the night.

It's great, and has a very different style from the stories currently here. I'd love to see more of this.

I'd write the second chapter, but I'm dead tired right now and I just feel like sleeping. I'll write a lot for it tomorrow.

Dawn on the City of the Damned, formerly Windsor, Ontario.

The survivors hid away, locking or barricading themselves within homes, businesses, and shops, escaping the ravenous hordes hungry for their flesh. They lived like this now, like mice within their holes, only emerging when the threat was gone, or appeared so. Attacks had slowed considerably and the war between the two sides of life came to a stalemate.

Three survivors, unhappy with their current lodgings and growing more imptient as the days waned, struck the first blow. With maddening speed, they built a fortified vehicle out of a delivery truck and construction supplies and escaped their time delayed grave with the hope of escaping the sea of mouths. They succeeded in escaping the infested commercial area and entering peaceful seeming residential area, where they encountered a small band of other survivors. They thought they had found peace, but death always has a card up his sleeve.

Chapter 2: True Finality

A moan stirred the house from it's peaceful slumber

Charles woke to the sound, his heart skipping a beat in his chest. He bolted from under the sheets dressed in simply shorts and snatched his firearm from the bedside table, and running through the door into the living room where he heard the sound.

As he turned the corner, there was a flash of light in the dark and the sound of a gunshot, and he froze. Had they learned to use guns? In the dim light he made out the culprit, a lone figure outlined against the couch, holding his weapon of choice.

A video game controller.

Nathan looked at Charles, the dim glow of Resident Evil 2 illuminating the room. He didn't seem to notice or even realize his extremely poor choice of past-times at this moment, as he returned to the game, stepping Leon over the fallen zombie before him. Charles was too dazed to be truly angry, but he sure felt contempt for his thoughtless friend. He placed his gun on a table near him and brushed aside loose strands of his long black hair, kept in a ponytail, and walked over to the couch, sitting next to Nathan.

"You know, if those zombies truly are after brains, then I'm sure you'll be safe." he said, exasperation apparent in his voice. Nathan turned a smile to him as a response and continued with his rampage through the burning streets of Racoon City. After a short while, Leah and the other occupants, Crystal, Daniel and Brandon all came to investigate the sounds they heard, to find the same tasteless pursuit of enjoyment at their expense. Eventually, in turn, each of them returned to bed, ending with Nathan taking his position on the couch. The impending death of his character, as well as the entire existence of the zombie hordes, endeed with the press of a button. If only all things could be simply shut off so simply.

Sorry about the delay, by the way. Holiday season and all, enjoying a new Xbox kind of detracts from your time as well. Damn that Fable...

This looks good and is definitely one of the better written stories on here. One thing is that, despite the nice prologue to the 2nd chapter alot happens in between; the whole escaping the zombies seems to be a crucial part of the story, and the other characters are introduced sort of after the point.

Seems very odd that they would smile over blowing their friends face off with his own gun, though. Maybe nathan's not the only insane character?

Though I dont think you'll be coming back to update this, what with it being almost a full month since the last post.
